Real Madrid have made a last minute shock signing of Michael Essien on loan from Chelsea FC.

The Ghanian midfielder, who can also play in defense, started his career at Liberty Professionals in his home country before moving to SC Bastia in France in 2000. After three years, he moved to league champions Olympique Lyonnais where he won three leagues and made his UEFA Champions League debut. In 2005, Essien then signed for Chelsea for 24.4 Million Pounds. Being named UEFA Footballer of the Year in 2007, he won the league twice, the FA Cup four times, the League Cup and Community Shield once and the UEFA Champions League last season.

The man who signed Michael Essien for Chelsea in 2005, Jose Mourinho, also signed him for Real Madrid.

It will be interesting to see how he does, especially after coming out of a season where he was plagued with injuries and made only 14 appearances all season. I think the main question is, why sign him when we had Nuri Sahin and Esteban Granero?

Sahin was also plagued with injuries, which is why Mourinho opted to loan him to Liverpool but Essien has the same problem AND he’s older the Sahin is. As for Granero, I honestly believe that there was no reason for Real Madrid to let him leave to QPR especially if they needed another midfielder. Even if Essien is a great player, Granero is a better choice. He’s a man used to Real Madrid and has gone through the youth to become part of the players who would give their all to the club.

Either way, I would be really interested to see how he does in the team and how Mourinho is planning to use him.
