As the second game of the Champions League was played today, Real Madrid visited Ajax in a game that could have ended very differently on any other day.

Jose Mourinho decided to start with a very different lineup than many expected with an eye on the weekend Clasico. The starting lineup was: Iker Casillas; Alvaro Arbeloa; Sergio Ramos; Pepe; Marcelo; Xabi Alonso; Michael Essien; Jose Callejon; Kaka; Cristiano Ronaldo; and Karim Benzema.

The first half was great for the Whites as they kept attacking with many shots coming mainly from Kaka, Marcelo, and Ronaldo with Ajax playing a with a very defensive tactic. Real Madrid were finally able to break the deadlock through a goal from Ronaldo on the 42nd minute.

The second half started with the same intensity as the first but this time Real Madrid were able to get an early goal with Karim Benzema scoring a great overhead kick that will stick in the memory of many Madrid fans for quite some time on the 48th minute. Ajax were not planning to give up as they kept trying with Moisander able to make it 2-1 on the 56th minute. Mourinho didn’t want to take any unnecessary risks and took off Jose Callejon for Angel Di Maria to add some speed and skill to the game.

With Ajax having their confidence restored, they were able to keep Real Madrid on the back foot throughout parts of the game. The Whites control over the game ended and Ajax were finding ways to keep the visitors on edge. Kaka, who had a great night, was taken off for Mesut Ozil with about 15 minutes to spare and Sami Khedira for Essien shortly after. Suddenly everything changed as Cristiano Ronaldo scored a beautiful curling shot on the 79th minute to make it 3-1 and then, only a minute later, he made it 4-1 to complete his hat-trick.

The worrying side was seeing the hat-trick hero limping towards the ending of the game and everyone is just hoping that it’s nothing serious and he will be fit to play Barcelona next week.
