Real Madrid hosted an underachieving Athletic Bilbao in a game which could have, surprisingly, ended with so many more goals for The Whites.
Jose Mourinho received some good news this week with the return of Karim Benzema and Sami Khedira, and also decided to rest some players before the important mid-week Champions League game against Manchester City. The starting lineup was: Iker Casillas, Alvaro Arbeloa, Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Fabio Coentrao, Xabi Alonso, Luka Modric, Mesut Ozil, Jose Callejon, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema.
The game started perfectly with Real Madrid taking control and keeping Athletic Bilbao on the backfoot. It only took 12 minutes to get the opener with Karim Benzema scoring a great chip over Iraizoz. It is still not completely certain whether the goal will be counted for the Algerian born attacker or if it will be counted as an own goal on Jon Aurtenetxe Borde as he was the last man to hit it before it went into the back of the net. More chances came after that from Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo and Benzema but Iraizoz did superbly to stop anything from happening. It didn’t take too long though for Real Madrid to get the second goal of the game after a free kick by Mesut Ozil was beautifully headed by Sergio Ramos into the back of the net on the 30th minute. Only two minutes later, Benzema was able to get on the scoresheet (for sure this time) after a wonderful finish which saw the hosts three goals ahead in only 32 minutes. There was some hope for Bilbao though as Ibai Gomez made it 3-1 on the 42nd minute.
The second half began and things seemed to slightly calm down. Real Madrid were still controlling the game and it was Mesut Ozil who scored on the 56th minute from a great assist from Benzema. Real Madrid made sure that they stayed in control and Iraizoz was the reason that The Whites weren’t able to score many more goals as he had some great saves with shots coming from Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Jose Callejon, Fabio Coentrao, and Sergio Ramos. Sami Khedira came on for Ozil to get some match fitness and he was able to make it 5-1 to score his first goal of the season and give Real Madrid a very comfortable win in the end.
Though Cristiano Ronaldo was very unlucky not to score, he played an extremely pivotal part in the game along Luka Modric and Jose Callejon.
A great game and very important ahead of a tough game coming up against English Champions, Manchester City after they regained top spot in the Premier League by beating Aston Villa 5-0 and seeing their rivals, Manchester United, shockingly lose 1-0 against Norwich.
