Athletic Bilbao 0-3 Real Madrid

Real Madrid visited the San Mames Stadium for the last time (as Bilbao will be relocating) and came out with a 3-0 win on the night.

Since there are no midweek games this week, Jose Mourinho decided to start with a stronger team than usual while still resting a few players. The starting lineup consisted of: Diego Lopez, Sergio Ramos [C], Pepe, Raul Albiol, Marcelo, Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira, Angel Di Maria, Luka Modric, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema.

The first half started brilliantly for Los Merengues as Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for the visitors with a wonderful free kick on the second minute of the game. From then onwards though, things were a bit quieter as Athletic Bilbao were getting their chances and almost got the equalizer from a great opportunity by Market Susaeta but was saved by Diego Lopez. Los Merengues barely had any opportunities as the Basque team were in control of the game so far but Angel Di Maria missed a glorious opportunity but saw his attempt hit the crossbar.

The second half wasn’t very different as Real Madrid had an early opportunity but Bilbao were still in control. Finally though, it was Cristiano Ronaldo who stepped up once again and scored a powerful header on the 68th minute to make it 2-0. From then onwards, Los Blancos finally had control of the game as Gonzalo Higuain came on to score and make it 3-0 on the 76th minute.

Real Madrid get the three points on the night and now have the rest of the week to train and relax as a league game against Real Betis comes up next week followed by the UEFA Champions League semi-finals against Borussia Dortmund…
