Real Madrid were able to make it three wins out of three as they beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu during the midday game.

Starting Lineup:

Yet again, Iker Casillas saw the bench as Diego Lopez was chosen to start the game against Athletic Bilbao. Also, Mesut Özil was benched as Carlo Ancelotti decided to start with Sami Khedira. The starting lineup consisted of:

Diego Lopez, Alvaro Arbeloa, Pepe, Sergio Ramos [C], Marcelo, Sami Khedira, Luka Modric, Isco, Angel Di Maria, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema

Real Madrid-
Isco (26′)
Cristiano Ronaldo (45+1′)
Isco (72′)

Athletic Bilbao-
Ibai Gómez (79′)

The Midday Game:

The match between Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao was chosen to be a midday game as it was played at 1:00 PM (KSA). Even though the players were not used to it, they were able to still come out with the needed three points at the end of it. I’m not sure if it was because the game was at an awkward time for the players or not, but their form seemed was below average. Even though they came out with the win in the end, they still need improvement.

Yet again, Isco was brilliant yet again as he was all over the place and was able to score two goals on the day. He kept running and showing that he was fully up for the game. At such a young age, it is great to see him do this well and who knows what the future holds for the Spanish midfielder. Isco has started every game since the beginning of the season and was voted the best signing of La Liga. So far, he is proving to be the best signing for Real Madrid so far this year.

Mesut Özil Benched:

Carlo Ancelotti has decided to bench Mesut Özil as he started with Sami Khedira. During the last game against Granada, Özil was subbed off during the match and didn’t seem too happy about it so I’m not sure exactly what the situation is at the moment. Personally, I don’t think this is a big deal since even the biggest names in the team are bound to be benched at some point. I highly doubt that there are any problems between the German and the team but you should expect many rumors to surface during the coming day or two either way.

Cristiano Ronaldo:

Cristiano Ronaldo was finally able to score his first goal of the season against Athletic Bilbao but there was a sense of unhappiness with him even after he was able to get his goal. I’m not saying that this has anything to do with the situation that he felt last season, but there obviously is something that is bothering the Portuguese. I understand that Florentino Perez has clearly stated that Ronaldo will be staying at the club, but the fact that he has not yet renewed his contract is slightly worrying me. Hopefully nothing major is wrong with him and things will be able to resume back to normal soon.

Luka Modric Brilliance:

During the first half of last season, Luka Modric was voted the worst signing of the year but since then he has been able to really prove himself. Today’s game against Athletic Bilbao has proven exactly why Los Merengues decided to buy him as he was all over the place and played some great passes while creating opportunities. The Croatian was also able to track back and help the team out as Bilbao had their moments of attacking during the game.
