Real Madrid 4-1 Getafe: Post-Match Observations

After a shaky start to the game, Real Madrid were able to come out with a comfortable 4-1 win against Getafe on a night where Asier Illarramendi was able to make his Santiago Bernabeu debut.

Starting Lineup:

It was highly expected that Carlo Ancelotti will start with Gareth Bale, which he intended to do, but an injury during the warm-up saw the Italian manager take him off the pitch and replace him with Isco. On the bench, Bale was replaced by Raphael Varane. The starting lineup consisted of:

Diego Lopez, Daniel Carvajal, Pepe [C], Nacho, Alvaro Arbeloa, Sami Khedira, Asier Illarramendi, Angel Di Maria, Isco, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema.

Real Madrid
Pepe (19′)
Cristiano Ronaldo [PG] (34′)
Isco (59′)
Cristiano Ronaldo (90+3′)

Lafita (5′)

Gareth Bale Injury:

The highly anticipated Santiago Bernabeu debut for Gareth Bale has to wait a little longer as the Welsh midfielder was taken off the squad list after suffering from discomfort in his thigh during the pre-match warm up. It is still not clear how long he will be out for but it is expected that he will be able to finally make his home debut next week against Atletico Madrid. I guess we will just have to wait and see…

Angel Di Maria:

What a day for Di Maria! He had a sensational game against Getafe as he was all over the place. The Argentine ran back to help in defense while also coming out and linking up very well with Isco, Karim Benzema, and Cristiano Ronaldo. He knows that it’s going to be very difficult to hold on to a starting position with Gareth Bale in the picture but his performances recently have surely made it very difficult for Carlo Ancelotti. Let’s just hope that he is able to keep up this type of form as the season goes on. He could be a very decisive player for Real Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo:

Cristiano Ronaldo has done it again… After scoring his brace (his second goal was with an unbelievable back-heel), Ronaldo has become the fifth highest scorer in Real Madrid history as he now has 208 goals in 205 games. With the way things are looking, he has no intention of slowing down anytime soon. The Portuguese recently signed a five-year contract with the club and, if he is able to continue at this level, he will surely become the highest scorer in the history of Real Madrid. What a player…

Karim Benzema:

Personally, I don’t really have anything against Karim Benzema but his performances have been way below average for the team recently and today proved it. He has missed a lot of chances that a player of his reputation should be able to score! I’m not saying that he isn’t trying but there are many times during the game where he is seen walking around or not really opening up to spaces where he can possibly score from. Improvement is needed from the Frenchman as there is a long season ahead.

My Personal Player Ratings:

Diego Lopez – 8.5/10
Daniel Carvajal – 7.5/10
Pepe – 8/10
Nacho – 8/10
Alvaro Arbeloa – 8.5/10
Sami Khedira – 8/10
Asier Illarramendi – 8/10
Angel Di Maria – 9.5/10
Isco – 9/10
Cristiano Ronaldo – 9/10
Karim Benzema – 7.5/10

Alvaro Morata – 8/10
Jese Rodriguez – 8/10
Luka Modric – 8/10
