Real Madrid 0-1 Atletico Madrid: Post-Match Observations

Real Madrid hosted Atletico Madrid in the first derby of the season as Carlo Ancelotti has suffered his first loss in charge of Los Merengues.

Starting Lineup:

The starting lineup was quite a surprise to most people as Asier Illarramendi and Sami Khedira both started while leaving Gareth Bale and Luka Modric on the bench. The starting lineup consisted of:

Diego Lopez, Alvaro Arbeloa, Pepe, Sergio Ramos [C], Fabio Coentrão, Sami Khedira, Asier Illarramendi, Angel Di María, Isco, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema

Scorers:

Real Madrid –
—-

Atletico Madrid –
Diego Costa (11′)

Modric Benched:

What could possibly be seen as the biggest surprise of the game was the last minute change as Carlo Ancelotti decided to start with Luka Modric on the bench as Asier Illarramendi started the match. It seemed like he was going for a slightly more defensive approach but that didn’t work out too well as Atletico Madrid were able to take control of the game and Diego Costa was able to make it 1-0 to the visitors. Modric and Gareth Bale were both introduced in the second half as they replaced Illarramendi and Angel Di María.

Angel Di María:

Angel Di María has had a great season so far as he was able to produce some unforgettable performances for Real Madrid. With that said, it was no surprise to see the Argentinean midfielder starting the match but his performance during the derby was below average as he made some crucial mistakes in the opening minutes, one of which led to Costa’s goal. He was rightly taken off at half time for a very eager Gareth Bale, who was able to add flair to the attack as Real Madrid worked on trying to get the equalizer.

Diego Costa:

This is something that has to be mentioned… Diego Costa is a great player, no doubts about that, but he really needs to work on two major problems: First of all, his temper is uncontrollable as he spent a lot of the game having arguments with the referee. Secondly (and more importantly), his tactics of trying to discomfort the opponents really needa to stop. It is completely understandable why he is doing all of that but it is still extremely unprofessional as he had countless arguments and fights with players such as Sergio Ramos, Fabio Coentrão, and Diego Lopez.

Alvaro Morata:

I have personally made my thoughts on Karim Benzema very clear as I kept saying that Alvaro Morata really needs to be given a chance in the starting lineup ahead of the French attacker and yesterday simply proved my point. Other than a great header in the first half, Benzema didn’t do anything that could have affected the game as it seemed as though he barely even tried. When Alvaro Morata came on for Isco towards the end of the second half, he showed great determination and almost scored a sensational goal with a double-kick that was saved by Courtois. The young Spanish attacker really deserves a chance to start and show what he is capable of.

It’s Still Early…

It’s true that Real Madrid currently find themselves five points behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid but it is still very early in the season and anything is still possible. There is no doubts that Los Merengues need to improve on their performances but, if they are able to do that, then they can be a great team and fight back to the top. They showed their great quality during the 6-1 win in the UEFA Champions League against Galatasaray and they will really need to bring that back to show everyone what they are capable of and how good of a team they actually are. Carlo Ancelotti can make it all happen…

My Personal Player Ratings:

Diego Lopez – 9/10
Alvaro Arbeloa – 8/10
Pepe – 8.5/10
Sergio Ramos – 8/10
Fabio Coentrão – 8/10
Sami Khedira – 7.5/10
Asier Illarramendi – 7.5/10
Angel Di María – 6.5/10
Isco – 8/10
Cristiano Ronaldo – 7.5/10
Karim Benzema – 6.5/10

Luka Modric – 8.5/10
Gareth Bale – 8.5/10
Alvaro Morata – 9/10
