Real Madrid hosted Celta de Vigo for the first official match of 2014 as they were able to eventually come out with a 3-0 win.

Starting Lineup:

Carlo Ancelotti left no surprises as he fielded a very strong starting eleven while leaving Gareth Bale and Jese Rodriguez on the bench. The starting lineup consisted of:

Diego Lopez, Daniel Carvajal, Pepe, Sergio Ramos [C], Marcelo, Xabi Alonso, Luka Modric, Angel Di Maria, Isco, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema.

Scorers:

Real Madrid –
Karim Benzema (67′)
Cristiano Ronaldo (82′)
Cristiano Ronaldo (93′)

Celta de Vigo –
——-

Diego Lopez:

Diego Lopez was easily our savior during a very poor first half performance from the team as Celta kept on attacking while he was always there to make sure that they did not score. Celta de Vigo also missed a few easy opportunities but with Los Merengues not having a great first half, Diego Lopez was always ready to save the team whenever it was needed.

Angel Di Maria:

Putting Diego Lopez aside, it was quite a good first half from Angel Di Maria as he was easily the most active player on the pitch and he tried to make a difference in the score. With no one else there able to really help out, it made things a little difficult for the Argentinean. The main focus though was not on his playing but rather on his reaction to being substituted during the second half. While leaving the pitch to the fans booing him, he grabbed his crotch as it seemed as though he meant it towards them. Of course, this could also be a mistake or a gesture that was taken out of context. He later insisted that he was only adjusting himself and that “it is always a complete mess with me” when it comes to the fans and the media. Everyone will have their own decisions on the matter in the end though, I guess…

Jese Rodriguez:

The little star of Real Madrid, Jese Rodriguez, came on during the second half and made an unbelievable difference as he was able to almost score with his first touch before assisting Cristiano Ronaldo’s first goal of the game. He was also able to perfectly link his play with Ronaldo and Gareth Bale as he played an integral part in helping Los Blancos secure a comfortable win in the end.

Cristiano Ronaldo:

Cristiano Ronaldo was very far from his best against Celta de Vigo as we barely were able to see him during the first half. As the second 45 minutes began, nothing major changed but anyone would be foolish not to know that the Portuguese ‘Commander’ only needs a second to make a difference as he came out from nowhere to score two goals and reach 400 career league goals. A beautiful ending to the night for Cristiano and he will be hoping to improve from here.
