Real Madrid was able to come out with a very convincing 3-0 win during the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals over Atletico Madrid.

Starting Lineup

Carlo Ancelotti decided to leave Gareth Bale out of the squad in the last minute as he decided to keep him fit for Saturday’s game. He was still able to play a strong lineup though, which consisted of:

Iker Casillas [C], Alvaro Arbeloa, Pepe, Fabio Coentrão, Xabi Alonso, Luka Modrić, Jesé Rodriguez, Angel Di María, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema

Real Madrid –
Emiliano Insúa [OG] (17′)
Jesé Rodriguez (57′)
Miranda [OG] (73′)

Atletico Madrid –

Angel Di María:

Angel Di María was easily the man of the match during the game as he was always dangerous going forward and also played an important role in all the goals. He will be remembered mostly for the perfect assist to Jesé for the second goal but his whole game was perfect from start to finish.

Diego Costa:

Diego Costa is a great attacker for Atletico Madrid, there are no doubts about that. When a player’s main goal is to frustrate the opponents with dirty playing and arguments, it seriously takes the beauty out of football. Of course, because of that, our players weren’t very innocent especially when focusing on Alvaro Arbeloa, Pepe, and Xabi Alonso, but that would not have happened if Costa had come out to simply play football.

Yet another great game from Pepe as he was controlling the defense and doing his job perfectly on the night. He was also able to get forward on some occasions and took the shot for the first goal, which deflected off Insúa and into the back of the net. The Portuguese defender has improved a lot and it is showing quite clearly on the pitch.

Luka Modrić:

Once voted the worst signing of the season, Luka Modrić simply used that to get better and stronger on the pitch. Now, he is one of the most important players in our midfield and he showed his skill against Atletico Madrid with his dribbles and passes. There is still so much more to come from the Croatian midfielder.

Not Over Yet…

Of course, a 3-0 win is a great score to be carrying into the second leg of the semi-finals but we have to keep in mind that the game is not over yet. There is still another 90 minutes left and we will be playing it away at a very difficult stadium. The Real Madrid players just need to stay focused and not be complacent against an Atletico Madrid side who will be ready to do anything for the win
