On April 2, Real Madrid will host Borussia Dortmund in a must-win match for both teams in a replay of last years’ UEFA Champions League Semi-Final Tie.
Real Madrid CF:
Real Madrid come into this match after a convincing 5-0 win against Rayo Vallecano during the weekend but that game followed two major losses against Barcelona and Sevilla, which saw the Men in White lose their place in the lead as they are now in third place. With a mission that seems too difficult, Real Madrid now have to concentrate on their match against Borussia Dortmund as they try to fight for La Decima. They main hopes of winning a title this season lies in this competition and the final of the Copa del Rey against Barcelona.
Recently, the team have seemed quite unmotivated with the fans making their displeasure very clear as well. Before the two losses, Real Madrid were flying high and practically anything seemed possible for them while everyone felt happy with the performances and the scores. After the losses though, it looks like things have changed as many fans are quickly finding ways to go against Los Merengues and their choices. It has even reached a point where Cristiano Ronaldo (the same man who has been our savior many times in the past few years) was jeered and whistled by his fans.
Nevertheless, the fans will now need to stand with the team as they are all trying to fight for the same cause. Real Madrid were given the opportunity to get revenge on Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League after last years’ disappointment and they all need to work together in order for it to happen.
Real Madrid’s Last 5 Games:
Real Madrid 5-0 Rayo Vallecano (La Liga)
Sevilla 2-1 Real Madrid (La Liga)
Real Madrid 3-4 Barcelona (La Liga)
Real Madrid 3-1 Schalke (UEFA Champions League)
Malaga 0-1 Real Madrid (La Liga)
La Liga Top 5:
1. Atletico Madrid – 76 Points
2. Barcelona – 75 Points
3. Real Madrid – 73 Points
4. Athletic Bilbao – 56 Points
5. Real Socidad – 50 Points
Real Madrid came out of a fantastic 31-game unbeaten run as they lost two games in a row in La Liga, which all but destroyed their title chances for the season. Now, they need to find ways to bring their form back up and show what they are capable of against a strong Borussia Dortmund side on Wednesday night. Are they able to do it? Of course but they will need to come out fighting and showing their hunger for the win. With the first game of the tie being played at home, they can’t afford a loss or a draw and need to do everything they can in order to take a comfortable lead into the second leg in Germany.
Expected Real Madrid Lineup:
Iker Casillas, Daniel Carvajal, Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Xabi Alonso, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Angel Di Maria, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema
Borussia Dortmund come into this match with some more problems than Real Madrid. Having been regarded as underdogs last season, the German team exceeded all expectations and found themselves in the final of the UEFA Champions League against Bayern Munich. They ended up losing that match but that still did not ruin a perfect season as they were hoping to keep the momentum going into this year. So far, they have been doing quite well in the Champions League but lost hopes of winning the Bundesliga after Bayern Munich were crowned champions last week.
In addition, they have a few absent players for their clash against Real Madrid that they will need to worry about. Dortmund will be missing Robert Lewandowski who was undoubtedly the hero last season after finding the net four times against Real Madrid. Also, they will have to play without Ilkay Gundogan, Jakub Błaszczykowski, Neven Subotić, Sven Bender, and Marcel Schmelzer. It will be a very difficult tie for the Germans, but it certainly will not be impossible.
Borussia Dortmund’s Last 5 Games:
Stuttgart 2-3 Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga)
Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Schalke (Bundesliga)
Hannover 0-3 Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga)
Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Zenit St. Petersburg (UEFA Champions League)
Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Borussia Mönchengladbach (Bundesliga)
Bundesliga Top 5:
1. Bayern Munich – 78 Points
2. Borussia Dortmund – 55 Points
3. Schlake – 54 Points
4. Bayer 04 Leverkusen – 48 Points
5. Wolfsburg – 47 Points
As I mentioned earlier, Borussia Dortmund are not having the greatest of seasons as they were hoping to have a shot at the title but they still find themselves doing well in second place yet they are only a point ahead of third-placed Schalke. They will have a very difficult game to play against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Quarter-Finals but will still need to bring their best performance on the pitch in order to leave with any chance. They lost the last time they visited Madrid and will therefore need to learn from their mistakes and try to leave with at least a draw as they will surely be waiting for the chance to play them in Germany for the second-leg.
Expected Borussia Dortmund Lineup:
Roman Weidenfeller, Łukasz Piszczek, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Mats Hummels, Erik Durm, Nuri Şahin, Sebastian Kehl, Kevin Großkreutz, Henrikh Mkhitrayan, Marco Reus, Julian Schieber
No matter what happens, it will surely be a very difficult tie for both teams as they come out with something to prove but their can only be one winner in the end. Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund will need to come out with everything they have as it will only get harder from here in the competition and they both have high hopes of progressing in the UEFA Champions League.
