Real Madrid hosted Bayern Munich during the first-leg of the UEFA Champions League as they were able to beat the Germans 1-0 and now they wait for the second-leg next week

Starting Lineup:

Carlo Ancelotti got some good news on the night as Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale were both fit to play but the problem was that they were both not at 100%. The Italian manager decided to start with Ronaldo and leave Bale on the bench as he named a very strong team. The starting eleven consisted of:

Iker Casillas [C], Daniel Carvajal, Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Fabio Coentrao, Xabi Alonso, Luka Modric, Angel Di Maria, Isco, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema

Real Madrid –
Karim Benzema (19′)

Bayern Munich –

Karim Benzema:

Karim Benzema has had his ups and downs during the season but it seems like he is on a constant run of good form recently. He may not be scoring as much but is always there to distribute the ball and continue an attack. Last night, he was all over the place yet again and could have helped with many opportunities. The Frenchman was also able to get his name on the scoresheet as Real Madrid take a slight advantage to Germany next week.

Carlo Ancelotti:

Carlo Ancelotti came into this game having not lost against against Bayern Munich and did not disappoint on the night as his record stands at:
Games Played: 7
Wins: 5
Draws: 2
Losses: 0
Also, the Italian manager was also able to end Josep Guardiola’s run of not losing a single game in the Santiago Bernabeu on the night. There is still another massive game to go next week but things are looking good and hopefully they will continue!

Cristiano Ronaldo & Gareth Bale:

Cristiano Ronaldo started the match after returning from injury. He wasn’t at his best during the match but was very close to getting on the scoresheet and also helped Real Madrid with some great passes. It seemed like he was still a little afraid since his injury has just ended and therefore we weren’t able to see many of his famous runs on the wing but he was still helpful to the team. The Portuguese was substituted on the 70th minute for Gareth Bale who wasn’t feeling too well after getting the flu. The Welshman made his runs and could have assisted another goal but didn’t have the greatest 20 minutes on the pitch either. Overall though, we should be expecting them both to fully recover and have a great game next week in Germany.

Possession? Ain’t Nobody Got Time For That!

One thing was clear in the game as Bayern Munich dominated possession on the night. They had the ball through huge spells of the game but Real Madrid were always there to stop the attacks whenever the Bavarians got close. When Karim Benzema scored the goal, Real Madrid only had 10% of the possession. In the end of the day, it really does not matter who has more possession in the game as long as they are able to use whatever possession they have as well as possible. Los Merengues knew that all too well as they were able to come out as the winners against Bayern Munich. Real Madrid ended the game with a 1-0 win despite having 28% possession.

Fabio Coentrao:

Fabio Coentrao was picked ahead of Marcelo on the night and performed beautifully. The Portuguese defender had a lot of criticism since last summer as his form wasn’t really at its best throughout the season. With that said, he played a massive game last night and was always available to help the team whether it was in defense against Arjen Robben or in attack as Real Madrid went up. He was able to give a great assist to Karim Benzema for the opening goal of the game and will surely be looking forward to the second leg.
