The second round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup is now over and it’s time to look at how the Real Madrid players have done with their respected teams during this round. With many great games played and some teams’ fates already decided for them, it was certainly an emotional round for many players who participated in the competition.

Brazil 0-0 Mexico:

Marcelo (Brazil) –

Marcelo played the full game against Mexico in a very intense match. Both teams ended up sharing the points but Marcelo did quite well at left-back on the night. It was a fairly  quiet game for him in terms of his attacks but he made sure that he was always prepared to stop any Mexican attack that came his way.

Spain 0-2 Chile:

Iker Casillas (Spain) –

Iker Casillas was picked in goal yet again for the Spaniards and did pretty well, but was helpless to stop two goals from Chile which sealed the departure of the Spanish National Team from the World Cup with one more game to play.

Sergio Ramos (Spain) –

Just like in the game against the Netherlands, Sergio Ramos wasn’t anywhere close to his best. He tried hard but wasn’t able to make a major impact most of the time. He is a great defender and can bounce back, but it’s too late to show it at the World Cup this year.

Xabi Alonso (Spain) –

Xabi Alonso was very determined to control the Spanish midfield but wasn’t fully able to make it happen and therefore committed some silly and unnecessary fouls on the night. Not a great game for him against Chile.

Cameroon 0-4 Croatia:

Luka Modric (Croatia) –

Completing 88% of his passes on the night (51/58), Luka Modric had a great game against Cameroon as his team were able to come out 4-0 winners. Wasn’t able to contribute to any of the goals but was always ready to make a difference for his team when it came to controlling the midfield on the night.

Switzerland 2-5 France:

Raphael Varane (France) –

A great game for Raphael Varane as he was able to complete all his tackles and was also very steady when it came to his defensive capabilities. He would have liked to come out with a clean sheet on the night but France were powerless to concede two great goals to a very resilient Switzerland team.

Karim Benzema (France) –

Another great game for Karim Benzema as he was able to get on the scoresheet and was named man of the match for the second consecutive match. He could have scored more after missing a penalty but it was still a great game for him.

Argentina 1-0 Iran:

Angel Di Maria (Argentina) –

It wasn’t the greatest game for Angel Di Maria but he was still able to help the team with some great runs during the game in a very difficult encounter against Iran. Argentina ended up winning the game in the final minutes through a goal by Messi. Di Maria had an average game overall but will surely be ready as Argentina go onto the next round of the tournament.

Germany 2-2 Ghana:

Sami Khedira (Germany) –

Sami Khedira started the game but was not able to contribute too much as the team were trailing 2-1 in the second half. He had a decent game but was substituted on the 70th minute for Bastian Schweinsteiger as the team were looking for more options to attack during the match.

USA 2-2 Portugal:

Pepe (Portugal) –

Was not able to play due to being suspended after receiving a red card against Germany in the first round.

Fabio Coentrao (Portugal) –

Was not able to play due to getting injured against Germany in the first round.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) –

Had a pretty great game overall, given that he clearly was not 100% fit. Cristiano Ronaldo was also able to keep Portugal’s hope alive after a wonderful cross to Valera who scored in the last second of the game to equalize. It is extremely difficult for them to make it through though, but Ronaldo should be quite proud of this performance.
