Last night, Real Madrid were crowned Champions of the 2014 UEFA SuperCup after beating Sevilla 2-0 with both goals coming from Cristiano Ronaldo.
The team has not been fully finished yet as there are still possibilities of players joining or leaving before the end of the transfer window. With that said, Carlo Ancelotti named a very strong starting lineup while starting two of the three newcomers, Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez. The starting lineup consisted of:
Iker Casillas [C], Daniel Carvajal, Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Fabio Coentrao, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema
Real Madrid –
Cristiano Ronaldo (30′)
Cristiano Ronaldo (49′)
What more can you say about a man like Cristiano Ronaldo? As the game was coming up, many were worried about his fitness as he was injured throughout the whole summer and missed the preseason games for Real Madrid. The Portuguese was named in the starting eleven and was able to show everyone that he is more than prepared for the coming season with two great goals.
James Rodriguez was given the opportunity to start in the game after his big move from AS Monaco. He wasn’t able to show his true potential after making some mistakes throughout the game and never really seeming very comfortable with the ball. The Colombian midfielder is still young and will surely need time to adapt to a team as big as Real Madrid with the pressure that comes with it. Don’t judge him from that one game because, once he adapts, he will surely be unstoppable.
Gareth Bale was a starter after having an amazing preseason and he showed everyone what he was capable of. The Welshman was all over the place with his sprints and skills while putting in a wonderful assist for Cristiano Ronaldo’s first goal of the game. A lot is expected from Bale for the coming season and he is clearly up for the task!
The captain was chosen to start the game against Sevilla given that he was the starting goalkeeper for the UEFA Champions League. Many were very against that move since it seems like his form has dipped quite badly during the past few months. Iker Casillas did not let any of it get to him and came out with some great saves to deny Sevilla any possibility of getting back into the game. That match will surely add to his confidence and he will want to continue this form as the season nears its beginning.
Toni Kroos has joined the club from Bayern Munich and a lot is expected from the German. Needless to say, he did not disappoint. With 100 touches and 79 passes, he will be an amazing part of the Real Madrid squad this season. It also looks like he won’t need much time to adapt to his new surroundings.
