Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid played the first-leg of the Spanish SuperCup as it was the visitors who were able to come out with a slight advantage after a late equalizing goal.

Starting Lineup:

Carlo Ancelotti decided to come out with a strong starting lineup but left their new expensive signing, James Rodriguez, on the bench as he came out with a slightly different tactic on the night. The starting lineup consisted of:

Iker Casillas [C], Daniel Carvajal, Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Xabi Alonso, Toni Kroos, Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema

Scorers:

Real Madrid –
James Rodriguez (81′)

Atletico Madrid –
Raul Garcia (88′)

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Injury –

Cristiano Ronaldo was named in the starting lineup for the match but wasn’t able to show his true potential. He was some way off the player who we all saw during the UEFA SuperCup against Sevilla and the friendly against Fiorentina. At the beginning of the first half, he was substituted off with James Rodriguez taking his place. According to the reports, he sustained an injury to his left leg but there is no official word as of now.

James Rodriguez –

James Rodriguez started the game on the bench but was able to come on during half-time instead of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Colombian midfielder didn’t have the greatest time on the pitch as he is still trying to blend in with the squad (which is very normal). With that said, he will surely be happy with the fact that he scored his first ever goal for Real Madrid on his Santiago Bernabeu debut. It may not have been the prettiest goal you’ll see as it was a case of being in the right place at the right time, but nonetheless he was able to score the opening goal of the game and that will surely do wonders for his self-esteem as he looks to continue his form from the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Xabi Alonso & Toni Kroos –

This was the first official game in which we have seen Xabi Alonso and Toni Kroos partner up in midfield and, to be honest, it wasn’t the prettiest sight in the world really. They were both more than happy to do what they do best with some great plays and passes to start off the attacks but, right now, it seems like this pairing simply doesn’t work too well. Maybe with some time it could end up being something opponents will be wary of but it was very clear that the partnership between Toni Kroos and Luka Modric worked a lot better in the UEFA SuperCup.

Angel Di Maria –

As expected, Angel Di Maria started the game on the bench and only came on for the last 15 minutes of the game. The second he came onto the pitch, the whole game changed and he clearly added the needed fuel to the Real Madrid attack. It was clear for everyone to see. Angel Di Maria is expected to leave the club before the end of the transfer window and I personally see no reason as to why this is even an option! The Argentinean midfielder has a lot to offer and was one of Los Blancos’ most dangerous attacking players last season so, therefore, there is simply no reason why we should sell him. Hopefully, the Real Madrid board reconsider their decision and keep Di Maria as a player at this club because he has proven that he deserves to be here.
