Real Madrid played their first game of La Liga this season as they hosted Cordoba. With many problems in the team, they were still able to come out with a 2-0 win and get their three points on the night.

Starting Lineup:

Carlo Ancelotti made a couple unexpected changes in the lineup and was also able to give Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez their La Liga debuts. The starting lineup consisted of:

Iker Casillas [C], Alvaro Arbeloa, Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema

Scorers:

Real Madrid –
Karim Benzema (30′)
Cristiano Ronaldo (90′)

Cordoba –
——-

Toni Kroos & James Rodriguez:

Both new Real Madrid players were given the opportunity to make their La Liga debuts against Cordoba and did quite impressively. Kroos kept to himself and showed everyone his usualelegant play in midfield with some great passes and interacting with the team very well. As for James, he was able to play a great game and almost got himself on the scoresheet. There is a lot expected from both players as the long season has just begun.

Iker Casillas:

It looks like Iker Casillas was the goalkeeper chosen to start in La Liga ahead of the newcomer, Keylor Navas. Whether it is the correct choice or not remains to be seen as Iker Casillas will have to prove a lot over the season. Even though he was able to get a clean sheet, a lot of his decision making on the night was questionable at best. With that said, he has definitely improved after the World Cup disaster and he will want to show everyone that “Saint Iker” is still here and deserves to play.

Karim Benzema:

Karim Benzema played a great game against Cordoba and was also able to get on the scoresheet. The problem is that, when I say “great game”, I am simply comparing him to himself. There is really no doubt that he needs to improve and he showed some massive signs tonight that he is a player who can really be important to the team. The French attacker will surely have his ups and downs as the season goes on but he is a player that Carlo Ancelotti is counting on. Let’s just hope that he doesn’t let the manager down, I guess.

Cristiano Ronaldo:

Cristiano Ronaldo is suffering from an injury and it is very obvious. He was able to get a goal to his name after a wonderful strike but that was the only positive that came out from his performance during the 90 minutes. He needs rest in order to be fully fit for some of the big games coming up and he won’t get it while playing every single game. The Portuguese is an integral part of the Real Madrid team and we simply cannot afford losing him in some big games this year.
