Real Madrid VS Atletico Madrid: El Derbi Madrileño Preview

Match: Real Madrid VS Atletico Madrid
Competition: La Liga
Location: Santiago Bernabeu
Time: September 13, 2014 – 9:00 PM (KSA)

Real Madrid will be playing against Atletico Madrid tomorrow night as both teams look to improve on their last La Liga game. It is only the third week of La Liga but this game will either raise or destroy the self-esteem of the teams involved and it will be a very close encounter. Let’s take a quick look at both teams heading into the game:

Real Madrid CF:

Real Madrid have not had a great start to the season after a lot of criticism received from their fans. With the sales of Angel Di Maria and Xabi Alonso, many feel as though the Los Meregues team have been drastically weakened even after they have been able to win the UEFA Champions League last year. Carlo Ancelotti will be aiming to prove the doubters wrong, which is something he was not able to accomplish in the opening two games of the league. With an unconvincing 2-0 win in the first week and a shocking 4-2 loss a week later, something definitely needs to change. A win over their city rivals, Atletico Madrid, will keep the doubters at bay for a while.

This isn’t the first time that these teams have played each other this season as they faced each other for the Spanish SuperCup where Atletico Madrid came out with a narrow 2-1 win (on aggregate). So, I guess that it’s slightly fair to say that the visitors will come in feeling a little more confident than Real Madrid at the moment. With that said, the SuperCup is now history and both teams need to come into this game with full focus if they are to win the game.

Real Madrid’s Last 4 Games:

Real Sociedad 4-2 Real Madrid
Real Madrid 2-0 Cordoba
Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid
Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid

In the past four official games, Real Madrid were only able to win one game. I completely agree with many peoples’ opinion that the Spanish SuperCup isn’t considered an important trophy but that doesn’t change the fact that Real Madrid weren’t able to win the game. With that said, this will be a completely different match and anything is expected tomorrow night.

My Predicted Real Madrid XI:

Iker Casillas
Alvaro Arbeloa, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Fabio Coentrao
Luka Modric, Toni Kroos
Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez, Cristiano Ronaldo
Karim Benzema

Atletico Madrid:

Atletico Madrid come into this game with slightly higher hopes even though they haven’t been able to win both opening games of the season. Diego Simeone has proven that he is an expert when it comes to getting his players mentally prepared for a big game such as this one and therefore they are expected to come out fighting. On paper, Real Madrid have the stronger team but Atletico have shown that they have incredible mental strength, something that Los Blancos have not really shown. Even though Atletico Madrid have not been able to win their first two games of La Liga this season, that doesn’t mean that they should be ruled out whatsoever.

In recent years, they have been able to find the correct ways to beat their city rivals and won’t be stepping back anytime soon. The current champions of Spain will want to prove that last season was not a fluke and a win against Real Madrid will keep them and their fans fully happy with their start this year. Anything is possible on the night.

Atletico Madrid’s Last 4 Games –

Atletico Madrid 2-1 Eibar
Rayo Vallecano 0-0 Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid
Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid

Again, they haven’t had the perfect start but they have yet to lose an official game this year. With two draws and two wins (one of each against Real Madrid), they are fully confident that they will be able to get the full three points at the Santiago Bernabeu tomorrow night. Yes, they will need to execute their tactics perfectly and also avoid any mistakes, but they have  shown time and time again that they are a team to be feared. No one can count them out anymore and they intend to keep it that way. With Diego Simeone at the top of it all, Real Madrid will not be expecting an easy game tomorrow.

My Predicted Atletico Madrid Lineup –

Miguel Moya
Juanfran, Diego Godin, Miranda, Guilherme Siqueira
Koke, Gabi, Mario Suarez, Raul Garcia
Antoine Griezmann, Mario Mandzukic
