Usually, I look forward to writing a post such as this one because it makes me reminisce all the things that have happened throughout this season and also focus on each and every player and how they have done. It’s kind of hard not to be biased but, if I’m to be completely honest, everyone has had quite an astonishing season so far! With that said, here is my letter grading on each player so far this season along with a short explanation as to why I gave them the particular grades.
Iker Casillas – B+
Iker Casillas has been quite great this season. The main reason as to why he didn’t get an A for my grading so far is because he started off quite slowly after a very forgettable year. He has successfully been able to pick himself back up though and is now coming out with great performances!
Keylor Navas – B
Keylor Navas arrived in Real Madrid amidst some controversy but quickly made his presence known. He hasn’t been able to play many games so far and the ones he has played haven’t been competitive enough to really grade him fairly. With that said, it’s going to get more difficult for him now in the Copa del Rey and we will be seeing his true capabilities.
Fernando Pacheco – N/A
Fernando Pacheco has only been able to play one game this season and he got a clean sheet. It’s quite impossible to grade him now and I personally don’t believe that we will be able to see much of him as the season gets more difficult from now on.
Alvaro Arbeloa – B-
Alvaro Arbeloa has had to get used to a substitute role after some amazing performances from Carvajal and it’s easy to see why. He has lost his pace and his ability to be lethal. The main reason I give him a B- is because of his determination since I personally believe it should be lower.
Daniel Carvajal – A
Daniel Carvajal has established himself as one of the most important players at the club and has really gained the trust from Carlo Ancelotti. He has always been able to give 100% and has never let any of us down.
Sergio Ramos – A-
Our vice-captain is one of our solid defenders at the club and has been able to continue improving and showing everyone just how lethal he is. He has a few times where he could lose his cool but, other than that, he has been outstanding!
Pepe – A
One of the main reasons why Real Madrid are currently on a 22-game winning streak is Pepe. The Portuguese defender has been lethal and been able to establish himself as one of the best center-backs in the game today. What a player!
Nacho – B-
My grading to Nacho may be a tad harsh but it’s difficult to judge a player who hasn’t been able to get many opportunities to show what he can do. He needs time and has huge potential to become a dependable player at Real Madrid.
Raphael Varane – A-
Even though he’s still quite young, he plays with a maturity that you can barely find anywhere else. Raphael Varane has been struggling with some injury problems but, whenever he’s able to play, he keeps surprising everyone with just how good he is!
Marcelo – A
He may not have had the greatest ending to last season but he quickly came back and showed everyone that he is able to learn from his mistakes. At a time where his place was in jeopardy, he fought hard and has now taken his place as one of the most important players of the team.
Fabio Coentrao – B
Fabio Coentrao, just like many of the other players, hasn’t gotten a chance to show what he can do very often because of injuries. With that said, he still has time to improve and Carlo Ancelotti really does trust in his capabilities. Only time will tell if he can regain the form he had last year.
Asier Illarramendi – B+
Many people expected Asier Illarramendi to have more playing time this season but it hasn’t happened yet. He was able to play a few games towards the end of the month but, even though he did well, he wasn’t able to fully shine. There is still a lot to come from him though.
Toni Kroos – A+
What a player! Toni Kroos arrived from Bayern Munich and became a vital part of the team from the very first day. He is a player that Carlo Ancelotti really depends on and it’s very clear to see why. His passing, shots, and build-up play are unbelievable!
Sami Khedira – C-
I’m not quite sure what exactly is going on with Sami Khedira but this is simply not his season. He is either injured or barely able to show the same flair he showed before and it doesn’t look like he’ll be at the team after this season.
Isco – A
Isco needs playing time and that’s exactly what he got this season. He has been able to get his nickname, “The Golden Boy” or “The Magician” after some exquisite performances and continues to improve. The future is extremely bright for the Spanish international.
Luka Modric – A
The genius of our midfield, Luka Modric. He has continued improving on his performances from last season and there isn’t anyone like him in the game right now. A great player and hopefully he can continue after being sidelined with a lengthy injury.
Gareth Bale – B
Gareth Bale started off the season in magical fashion but slowly came back down to Earth. It’s hard giving him a rating because he has his ups and downs but always does his absolute best. One thing is for sure though: We haven’t seen the last of Gareth Bale.
Jese – N/A
Jese has recently come back from an injury which kept him sidelined since March and he has done pretty well. He still didn’t get a full opportunity to show his play this season as the staff want to take it slow. The second half of the season will be vital for him.
Cristiano Ronaldo – A+
Breaking record after record, Cristiano Ronaldo has somehow found a way to improve this year. It doesn’t look like he has any intention of stopping any time soon and will be one of the most important parts of this Real Madrid squad as the season goes on.
Karim Benzema – A
Through all the criticism came a Karim Benzema who has shown that he truly deserves to play for a club such as Real Madrid. Benzema has found a way to connect extremely well with Ronaldo and Bale and has continued to show him improvement in front of goal.
Chicharito – C
On loan from Manchester United, Chicharito has come with high hopes. He was always going to be a substitute for Benzema and it’s clear to see why. Even though he had a few good performances, his below-average form has overshadowed it all. Hopefully the second half of the year will prove to be better for him.
