Real Madrid were knocked out of the Copa del Rey to Atletico Madrid after losing 4-2 on aggregate.
Carlo Ancelotti hinted that he will be fielding his strongest possible team against Atletico Madrid and that is exactly what he did. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to go against a strong Atletico Madrid side. The starting eleven consisted of:
Keylor Navas, Daniel Carvajal, Sergio Ramos [C], Pepe, Marcelo, Toni Kroos, Isco, Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema
Real Madrid –
Sergio Ramos (20′)
Cristiano Ronaldo (54′)
Atletico Madrid –
Fernando Torres (1′)
Fernando Torres (46′)
With Fernando Torres scoring a goal in the opening minute of the game, Real Madrid’s job became that much more difficult. Los Merengues kept trying but were not able to get more than one goal in the first 45 minutes despite them having most of the possession. When the second half began, Torres scored again in the opening minute to put the game beyond any doubts and give Atletico Madrid a deserved aggregate win on the night.
The team didn’t really do that well overall but Sergio Ramos was probably the most disappointing on the night. Putting aside the goal that he scored, his defending was horrendous! He kept fouling and will also need to take blame for the first goal that was conceded. As for Pepe, he didn’t have a great game either as he was too slow with the second goal conceded. The Portuguese got injured with a bruised rib and will have to sit out for a few weeks. With Raphael Varane sitting on the bench, change will definitely be needed even after the return of Pepe to the squad.
What. A. Player. Even though Real Madrid lost the game on aggregate, Isco was the one who showed the most promise in the team. He kept doing his best to try finding a way through a very solid Atletico Madrid defence and was always available to help out his teammates in whatever way possible. A great night for the Spanish midfielder and it’ll be very difficult to drop him anytime soon.
Another disappointing night for James Rodriguez as he wasn’t even close to his best. He tried but his attempts were always ending with the ball going to an Atletico Madrid player and he never really seemed up for it. Unfortunately, this has been happening for quite some time and I really believe that the time has come for Jese Rodriguez to be given a chance in his place. Sadly, I don’t see that happening anytime soon…
It seems as though all the criticism from the fans and the media have gotten to Gareth Bale’s head. Against Atletico Madrid, he had many opportunities to shoot but always looked for the pass instead. Well, this is what you get for criticising him for the past few weeks! The Gareth Bale that we always knew is the type to take those shots and make those runs but we didn’t see any of that on the night. My blame on this particular point goes to the fans. Ridiculous.
