Real Madrid visited Sweden to play their second match of the UEFA Champions League, which was against Malmo, as they came out with a 2-0 win on the night that many expected would be a lot more.

Starting Lineup:

With the weekend game against Atletico Madrid in mind, Rafael Benitez decided to rotate a little bit and give some other players a chance on the night. The starting lineup consisted of:

Keylor Navas, Daniel Carvajal, Nacho Fernandez, Raphael Varane, Alvaro Arbeloa, Toni Kroos, Carlos Casemiro, Isco, Mateo Kovacic, Cristiano Ronaldo [C], and Karim Benzema

Scorers:

Malmo:

Real Madrid:
Cristiano Ronaldo (29′)

Should Have Been Easier:

I’m pretty sure that Rafael Benitez and the rest of the team expected this game to be quite straight-forward and that he will be able to rest some more players as the match goes on. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case as Los Merengues spent most of the game attacking but weren’t able to score as many as they would have liked. Credit has to be given to the Malmo defense though as they were able to keep the Real Madrid team at bay for long periods at a time during the match.

Cristiano Ronaldo:

With his two goals against Malmo, Cristiano Ronaldo is now officially the highest goalscorer in Real Madrid’s history with 324 goals in seven seasons with Los Merengues! Raul is now in second place after he has scored 323 goals in 16 years with the club. This is definitely a milestone that Cristiano Ronaldo was chasing and he has been able to do it in style! What a player, what a legend…

THE TEAM THOUGH

Alvaro Arbeloa:

Alvaro Arbeloa was able to make his first appearance of the season against Malmo and he did fairly well. He was able to help in attack while also making sure that his defensive duties weren’t forgotten. As Benitez decided to experiment by putting the Spaniard as left-back and giving Marcelo a rest, it seemed as though it worked. Now, I know that it was against Malmo and that this may not work as well against bigger opposition, but it’s good to see Arbeloa looking comfortable at left-back on the night.
