Real Madrid hosted Levante in a match that they fully expected to win and they delivered. The question is: Did they deliver enough?
Rafael Benitez had more injuries to worry about as the international break left him without Luka Modric and Karim Benzema who are both recovering. The starting lineup consisted of:
Keylor Navas, Danilo, Raphael Varane, Nacho, Marcelo [C], Toni Kroos, Carlos Casemiro, Mateo Kovacic, Isco, Gareth Bale, and Cristiano Ronaldo
Real Madrid –
Cristiano Ronaldo (30′)
Jese Rodriguez (81′)
It was great to finally have Danilo back with us especially after Daniel Carvajal got injured. With that said, the Brazilian right-back didn’t really have the greatest of games as he misinterpreted many of the attacks and crosses that came his way. He got lucky that none of his mistakes led to a goal by the opponents but it probably won’t be the same when we play against Paris Saint-Germain later this week as players such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani will make us pay for any and all mistakes.
Marcelo was our captain on the night and he played like a true leader! The left-back was extremely influential in his runs forward and he always kept the opponents at bay whenever they tried to threaten our goal. Furthermore, Marcelo was also able to get his name on the scoresheet for the first time this season after a wonderful play with Cristiano Ronaldo!
Lucas Vazquez came on at half-time to replace Gareth Bale and, as we saw before, he showed some great glimpses of his capabilities but he definitely needs time. For him to fully excel, he will need more playing time and, unfortunately, I don’t really see that happening with Real Madrid this season. With Rafael Benitez’s rotation policies though, it is possible that we will be seeing more of him but I don’t know if it would be enough…
