PSG 0-0 Real Madrid: Post-Match Observations

Real Madrid visited Paris for the third match of the UEFA Champions League as both teams shared the points in a 0-0 draw.

Starting Lineup:

Rafael Benitez is facing a major selection headache as he has five players out due to injury: Pepe, Daniel Carvajal, James Rodriguez, Gareth Bale, and Karim Benzema. The starting lineup consisted of:

Keylor Navas, Danilo, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos [C], Marcelo, Carlos Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Lucas Vazquez,  Isco, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Jese.

Real Madrid –

I am genuinely trying not to be too harsh on Jese ever since his return from injury but he simply hasn’t been himself. I can’t take away the fact that he is really trying hard and his lack of appearances isn’t doing any favors but in a game like the one against PSG, we needed more and he simply couldn’t deliver. The Spaniard needs more time on the pitch but, with the way he has been playing, it is quite difficult for Benitez to give him that time. It’s a difficult dilemma but hopefully one that can be resolved soon.

Raphael Varane:

I think it’s quite safe to say that Raphael Varane has been our most consistent central defender this season and he did not disappoint against Paris Saint-Germain. The Frenchman was able to keep the opponents at bay for most of the match and was always able to do his job well. He certainly deserves to continue being a starter for the team, let’s just hope that his old injury problems don’t end up returning at some point…

What a game he had! Marcelo was the man of the match in my opinion as he caused havoc no matter where he was on the pitch. The Brazilian left-back was always available to defend as he went up and caused a lot of problems for the PSG defenders. He’s unlucky not to at least get an assist to his name on the night as he was always coming out with some amazing passes.

Lucas Vazquez:

No, Lucas  Vazquez didn’t have a good game against Paris Saint-Germain but he always shows glimpses of what he could do at some point. The Spanish winger is still quite young and needs time to show his true potential. Of course, more playing time will help and it seems as though Rafael Benitez trusts him enough to play him in some games once in a while. I hope that he will be one of the players that have a long career at Real Madrid.
