Real Madrid continued their inconsistent performing as they took on Athletic Bilbao during a rainy night in Madrid as it was the birthday boy, Alvaro Morata, who saved us this time.

Starting Lineup:

Zinedine Zidane made a couple changes due to injury but, all in all, it was quite a strong starting team on the night. The starting lineup consisted of:

Keylor Navas, Daniel Carvajal, Pepe, Raphael Varane, Marcelo [C], Toni Kroos, Mateo Kovacic, Isco, Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema

Scorers:

Real Madrid –
Karim Benzema (7′)
Alvaro Morata (84′)

Athletic Bilbao –
Sabin Merino (28′)

Raphael Varane:

Raphael Varane has hardly put a foot wrong all game and was very solid as part of the back four but was almost caught napping as he almost gifted the opposition a goal late in the game that would have definitely seen Los Merengues drop some points on the night. It just goes to show that one minor lapse in judgement could determine a whole game for someone.

Cristiano Ronaldo:

I really have no idea what is going on with Cristiano Ronaldo lately but I am going to repeat myself and say that, even though he is an integral part of this squad, he should not be invincible. If ANYONE is having a bad game, take him off. It’s not rocket science and Zinedine Zidane should make these tough decisions as a manager of the team. Ronaldo’s decision-making during the last shot of the game just sums up the full match for the Portuguese.

Karim Benzema:

In what world does Karim Benzema deserve to start ahead of Alvaro Morata?! Yes, he was able to get his name on the scoresheet but, if you watch the game, it was a finish that any striker (or, honestly, professional football player) should have scored as all the hard work was already done by Isco beforehand. Other than the goal though, Benzema seemed lost and no matter what he tried to do, it just would not work out.

Gareth Bale:

Gareth Bale was not able to get his name on the scoresheet nor the assist list during the match but he fought and ran more than any other player on the pitch (alongside Mateo Kovacic, in my opinion). The Welshman had a great night and tried to do everything in his power to make things work but it just wasn’t meant to be.
