In the last ever La Liga Derby at the Vicente Calderon, Real Madrid came out victorious with quite a comfortable 0-3 win on the night thanks to a wonderful hat-trick by Cristiano Ronaldo
Zinedine Zidane was missing five of his regular starters and that caused serious worry amongst the fans. The lineup was named as there were a couple minor shocks. What we didn’t know was that we were about to watch him tactically outclass Diego Simeone in Atletico’s own backyard. The starting lineup consisted of:
Keylor Navas, Daniel Carvajal, Raphael Varane, Nacho, Marcelo [C], Mateo Kovacic, Luka Modric, Isco, Lucas Vazquez, Gareth Bale, and Cristiano Ronaldo
Atletico Madrid –
Real Madrid –
Cristiano Ronaldo (23′)
Cristiano Ronaldo (71′)
Cristiano Ronaldo (77′)
A defensive pairing which has had its hiccups in the past this season went perfectly against Atletico Madrid as Raphael Varane won all his aerial duels while Nacho was a beast at the back making sure that almost nothing went past him no matter how bad the pressure was from the opponents. It was a defensive masterclass by our two younger center backs which will do wonders for their confidence and, maybe a little more importantly, the fans confidence in them.
Right from the first whistle, it was Isco creating the danger and running after the ball, which caught the Atletico Madrid players a little off guard. He was quick, prepared, and dangerous. The Spaniard is definitely doing everything in his power to fight for a place in the starting eleven and Zidane will be extremely happy to see that.
“He’s finished, this is the end of the legend.”; “Why would Real Madrid renew his contract when all he does is ruin the team now?”
It’s simple. Real Madrid renewed his contract because they knew very well that he is still capable of causing havoc when he’s on form and the Portuguese showed it on the big stage. This was Cristiano Ronaldo’s second hat-trick at the Vicente Calderon and he couldn’t have found a better time to make that happen! The Balon d’Or nominee was on exceptional form as he was also able to run back and help out in defense when his team needed him. Cristiano Ronaldo is now the highest scorer in Derbies after surpassing the legendary Alfredo Di Stefano.
People said that he was out of his depth at the team and others said that he was just getting ridiculously lucky. Well, you don’t get “lucky” when you beat Atletico Madrid 0-3 at the Vicente Calderon. No, that’s when you shut all your critics up and show the world that you definitely deserve to be where you are at the moment. Zinedine Zidane may still be learning as a manager but he proved everyone wrong and will continue to do so. The French manager has many tricks up his sleeve as he’s shown us all before and it will be very interesting to see how things go from here.
