Real Madrid visited the stadium where they achieved “La Decima” as they continue their road in the UEFA Champions League by playing against Sporting Lisbon and were able to secure the points in order to make it through to the next round of the competition.

Starting Lineup

Zinedine Zidane decided to go with the same players that started against Atletico Madrid earlier in the week except for one change as Sergio Ramos replaced Nacho Fernandez on the team. The starting lineup consisted of:

Keylor Navas, Daniel Carvajal, Sergio Ramos [C], Raphael Varane, Marcelo, Mateo Kovacic, Luka Modric, Isco, Lucas Vazquez, Gareth Bale, and Cristiano Ronaldo

Scorers:

Sporting Lisbon –
Adrien Silva (80′)

Real Madrid –
Raphael Varane (29′)
Karim Benzema (87′)

Sergio Ramos

The Real Madrid captain actually got a lot of stick last night after a horrible pass, which almost lead to a Sporting Lisbon goal but overall, the Spanish defender did quite well. This was his first game back from injury and he had to deal with quite a high-intensity game. Also, it makes perfect sense that he would start against Sporting since he’s one yellow card away from a suspension in La Liga and they won’t want to risk him missing El Clasico on December 3.

Isco

Isco was arguably the best player on the pitch against Atletico Madrid but wasn’t anywhere close to being as influential in the UEFA Champions League tie. I think that it’s simply because the Spaniard is not used to player 180 minutes a week and it could be that he was a little jaded. Having said that, Zidane shouldn’t have kept him on the pitch for as long as he did and James Rodriguez was the man that really should have started that game.

Raphael Varane

Quite a memorable night for Raphael Varane as he had quite a good game at the back and was also able to get his name on the scoresheet for the third time this season (second time during this UEFA Champions League campaign). The Frenchman has had some bad performances this season but consistency in the side is really helping him show his true capabilities.

Gareth Bale

One of the bad memories of the match against Sporting Lisbon was the fact that Gareth Bale had to be substituted with an injury to his ankle. It looked like the Welshman was in quite a lot of pain and the main worry now is whether he will be available on December 3 for El Clasico. Marcelo was also substituted after feeling pain in his leg as well.
