Real Madrid lost El Clasico in a game which kind of seemed doomed from the start. Los Merengues have now put themselves in a very risky position and will have to win their remaining games if they are to guarantee lifting the La Liga title at the end of the season.
My Personal Player Ratings:
Keylor Navas – 8.5/10
Three goals conceded, yes, but that could have been a lot more if it wasn’t for Keylor Navas’ best performance of the season. He was on absolute fire as the Costa Rican stopped some guaranteed opportunities for the Catalans which left them frustrated throughout a lot of the match.
Daniel Carvajal – 6/10
Not his greatest performance as he seemed to go forward well but, defensively he was not at his best. The Spanish right-back was outplayed one too many times on the night.
Nacho Fernandez – 7.5/10
In his first ever El Clasico, Nacho Fernandez actually did very well. He is obviously Real Madrid’s fourth choice defender but he played with confidence and was able to stop quite a few dangerous attacks coming from the Barcelona camp.
Sergio Ramos – 3/10
An absolutely horrible game for Sergio Ramos as he did nothing of note on the night and capped off a terrible performance with an extremely uncalled for red card (highly deserved, I may add). Not the brightest 77 minutes from our captain.
Marcelo – 8/10
Continued his great form from the game against Bayern Munich by putting in yet another solid display. The Brazilian is one of the first names on the teamsheet and it’s very obvious as to why Zidane trusts him so much.
Carlos Casemiro – 4.5/10
Lionel Messi was absolutely brilliant and made Carlos Casemiro look lost throughout major spells in the match. An early yellow card for the Brazilian made sure that it was going to be a difficult match as he somehow miraculously escaped a red card after tackling Lionel Messi a couple more times on the night
Toni Kroos – 7/10
Kept his composure and almost got his name on the scoresheet early in the second half, Toni Kroos had a pretty good game as the German midfielder was able to start off many of the dangerous attacks for Los Blancos
Luka Modric – 7.5/10
The more dangerous player out of our central midfielders as Luka Modric caused chaos for the Barcelona defenders a few times. The Croatian is slowly but surely finding his form again and it’s a very decisive time to do so as well!
Gareth Bale – 4/10
It’s a miracle that Zidane chose to start him and, after only 36 minutes, he found himself taken off through injury yet again having done nothing of note throughout his time on the pitch
Cristiano Ronaldo – 5/10
Not entirely sure what he was planning to do in the game but his shots and passes and overall decision making was shocking as he continuously wasted chances for Los Blancos on the night
Karim Benzema – 5.5/10
Karim Benzema didn’t put in a good performance and it was a little surprising to see him play the full 90 minutes. Personally, I feel Isco should have made an appearance in his position during the second half. Maybe Sergio Ramos’ red card messed that up…
Marco Asensio – 8/10
Came on for Gareth Bale and slowly got into the game. He was a threat on the right side and was able to attract the defenders as they realized his danger. Had the best chance to assist Ronaldo on the night but the Portuguese hit it over the bar.
Mateo Kovacic – 6/10
Came on for Carlos Casemiro and was doing okay until Ramos received his red card. After that, Mateo Kovacic seemed lost and panicked as he had to take a more defensive role.
James Rodriguez – 8/10
Was 30 seconds away from being Real Madrid’s unlikely hero after scoring the equalizer on the 86th minute before Lionel Messi had the last minute winning goal.
