We waited for what seemed like countless months as Real Madrid finally played their first preseason match and it was against Manchester United in the International Champions Cup.
Manchester United have already played a couple preseason games before this as Zinedine Zidane’s main priority was gaining match fitness for his squad on the night. Therefore, he decided to come out with two completely different starting elevens on the night while giving an opportunity to some of the youth players.
From all the new Los Merengues signings, Theo Hernandez was the only person to make his debut on the day and has proven himself difficult to handle for the Red Devils defense as he forced a penalty kick which was scored by our captain during the second half, Carlos Casemiro.
During the first half, the starting eleven consisted of:
Keylor Navas, Daniel Carvajal, Nacho Fernandez, Raphael Varane, Marcelo, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Isco, Lucas Vazquez, Gareth Bale, and Karim Benzema
The first half of the match ended 1-0 to Manchester United thanks to a goal by Jesse Lingard. Even though Real Madrid did well in possession, they weren’t as threatening as the English club, which was understandable.
As for the second half, the starting eleven consisted of:
Kiko Casilla, Achraf Hakimi, Alvaro Tejero, Theo Hernandez, Carlos Casemiro, Manu, Franchu, Mateo Kovacic, Dani Gomez, Luis Quezada, and Oscar
Read Madrid didn’t dominate the second half but it was very interesting to see the younger players doing what they can to impress as Oscar was particularly someone many wanted to keep their eye on alongside Achraf Hakimi. Carlos Casemiro scored the equalizing goal through a penalty.
It was a good start to preseason and there is no doubt that Zinedine Zidane would be quite happy with what he saw from his team. Now the team prepares for their next opponents in the International Champions Cup, Manchester City, on Wednesday night.
