Real Madrid’s World Cup So Far

Many Madridistas have a nation that they support playing at the 2018 FIFA World Cup but still have their eyes on the players who are part of the club as that in itself is a massive discussion when it comes to the debates. Who did well? Is a certain country progressing because of a specific player or is it because the team is that good? Well, let’s take a look at how the Real Madrid players are doing so far in Russia after the group stages are finalized.

Real Madrid Players in the Squad:
Sergio Ramos

Nacho Fernandez
Daniel Carvajal
Lucas Vazquez
Marco Asensio

Group: B

Status: Qualified

Spain have qualified to the next round of the competition after topping the group with 5 points. They drew the first game 3-3 against Portugal before beating Iran 1-0 and coming out with a draw in their final game against Morocco.

Sergio Ramos – Played every game so far under Fernando Hierro and has been doing well. Of course, Sergio Ramos wouldn’t be himself if it wasn’t for a few questionable decisions here and there but a solid three games so far from the Spaniard.

Nacho Fernandez – Started the opening match on the right as Dani Carvajal was injured and had a good game overall. Unfortunately, will be remembered for giving away a penalty after tackling his Real Madrid teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo, which was converted successfully by the Portuguese. His best moment though also came against Portugal as he scored a magnificent goal from outside of the area (if you haven’t seen it yet, do it now then come back here!)

Daniel Carvajal – Was back in the starting lineup for the second and third games and showed what the squad was missing against Portugal.

Isco – It’s no secret that Isco is a sensational player and he showed the world yet again with some spectacular performances as he’s arguably one of the best players in the Spain team so far. Scored one goal so far, which game in the final match against Morocco.

Lucas Vazquez – Maybe he got more chances to play than he initially thought but his importance to the team cannot be questioned. Just like with Real Madrid, Lucas Vazquez offers something different that no one in the team can and is a brilliant asset to have in any squad.

Marco Asensio – All of his appearances so far for the team has been off the bench but he is being used superbly so far. Has had a few good opportunities and has shown that he is an integral part of Spain’s future.

Real Madrid Players in the Squad:
Cristiano Ronaldo

Group: B

Status: Qualified

Portugal have qualified for the next round of the FIFA World Cup in second place with 5 points after drawing their first match 3-3 against Spain before beating Morocco 1-0 and then having to settle for a 1-1 draw in their final match against Iran

Cristiano Ronaldo – Absolutely sensational so far in the competition. He made everyone take note with his hat-trick against Spain before scoring a beautiful header against Morocco. Unfortunately, he couldn’t get his name on the score sheet against Iran and missed a penalty but that should not take away from a wonderful World Cup campaign so far.

Real Madrid Players in the Squad:
Achraf Hakimi

Group: B

Status: Eliminated

Morocco played well but unfortunately the final results don’t show it as they were always the underdogs in a group with Spain, Portugal, and Iran as they finished the group in last place with one point. They lost 1-0 against Iran and 1-0 against Portugal before a very entertaining 2-2 draw against Spain.

Achraf Hakimi – A starter for the Morocco team, Achraf Hakimi is one of the youngest players in the World Cup. He did well overall and this competition is bound to do a lot of good for him in regards to growing as a player.

Real Madrid Players in the Squad:
Raphael Varane

Group: C

Status: Qualified

France qualified first in their group with 7 points as they beat Australia 2-1 then got all three points against Peru with a 1-0 win but had to settle for a 0-0 draw in their final match against Denmark.

Raphael Varane – One of the most important players in the squad, Raphael Varane has been able to show his capabilities so far. It hasn’t been the greatest campaign by France but they have been able to get the job done and Varane is an integral part of making that happen and the trust shown in him is clear as he was the captain during their final group match.

Real Madrid Players in the Squad:
Luka Modric
Mateo Kovacic

Group: D

Status: Qualified

Croatia have been absolutely brilliant so far in the competition after getting maximum points in their group by beating Nigeria 2-0 then Argentina 3-0 before rounding it off with a 2-1 win against Iceland

Luka Modric – Easily the most influential player on the field for Croatia, Luka Modric has shown yet again that he is only getting better with age. The Croatian midfielder was absolutely integral so far and will continue to be that way as they progress to the next round.

Mateo Kovacic – The Real Madrid player has had controversy around him after admitting he may leave the club but that has not affected his substitute performance for the National Team. Mateo Kovacic has shown his importance and started against Iceland in their final match.

Real Madrid Players in the Squad:
Carlos Casemiro

Group: E

Status: Qualified

Brazil may not have done as well as they wanted initially but got back just in time and showed that they are ready to go far in the competition. They finished their group in first place with 7 points after a 1-1 draw against Switzerland was followed by a 2-0 win against Nigeria and another 2-0 victory against Serbia.

Marcelo – A starter for the team, Marcelo has been dazzling on the left flank for the first two matches. Unfortunately, he had to be taken off prematurely against Serbia after suffering an injury but should recover in time for their upcoming fixture.

Carlos Casemiro – The Brazilian player who has always been able to ‘clean up’ when it comes to midfield, Carlos Casemiro had a good few games but we all know that he is capable of so much better. Hopefully, we will be able to see more of the true Casemiro next round!

Costa Rica:

Real Madrid Players in the Squad:
Keylor Navas

Group: E

Status: Eliminated

Costa Rica fought hard but unfortunately there was only so much that could be done as they ended the group in last place with only one point. They lost their first match 1-0 versus Serbia before suffering a 2-0 loss to Brazil and earning their only point through a 2-2 draw with Switzerland.

Keylor Navas – The goalkeeper brought his Real Madrid form into the World Cup and came out with some spectacular moments throughout the group stages. Unfortunately, he couldn’t really do much more as Costa Rica were eliminated from the competition.

Real Madrid Players in the Squad:
Toni Kroos

Group: F

Status: Eliminated

The first shock of the campaign so far was Germany’s elimination. The current title holders were in last place in their group with only 3 points after a 1-0 loss to Mexico was followed by a 2-1 win against Sweden and then a shocking 2-0 loss to South Korea.

Toni Kroos – Individually, Toni Kroos had a great few games and scored a beautiful goal in the dying minutes against Sweden to earn all three points but unfortunately, it wasn’t a good three matches by Germany and they have paid the ultimate price of being knocked out of the FIFA World Cup in the Group Stages.
