Real Madrid were planning to end this season on a high note but failed in their last away game of the season as they came out with a 3-1 loss to a strong Real Sociedad side.
Zinedine Zidane made a few surprising decisions with the squad list but was able to name a strong lineup, at least strong enough to overcome Real Sociedad but Jesus Vallejo’s early red card and way too many defensive mistakes made that impossible. The starting eleven consisted of:
Thibaut Courtois, Daniel Carvajal, Jesus Vallejo, Nacho Fernandez, Marcelo [C], Carlos Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Isco, Marco Asensio, Brahim Diaz, Karim Benzema
Real Sociedad –
Mikel Merino (26′)
Joseba Zaldua (57′)
Ander Barrenetxea (67′)
Real Madrid –
Brahim Diaz (6′)
I get where the young defender is coming from but he should also be experienced enough to understand how much a red card would affect the team. Stopping a goal purposely with his hand kept the score at 1-1 (and he was lucky that Courtois saved the penalty) but Real Madrid being a man down with no defenders at the bench in a game where losing won’t matter is not the time for you to purposely get a red card. We have probably seen the last of Vallejo as he is suspended for the upcoming match and is expected to leave the club in the summer.
By far the best player at the club right now and the best winger we have (other than maybe Vinicius Junior). The young Spaniard was causing countless problems and was able to score his first ever Real Madrid goal brilliantly. These are the type of players we need, not the older and stupidly entitled players that we currently have in the squad.
Zinedine Zidane has been giving Courtois the minutes but the Belgian has been unable to repay the faith. Other than saving a penalty against Real Sociedad, the goalkeeper made countless mistakes and looks extremely uncomfortable in goal. He has no confidence anymore and it is very clear for everyone to see.
Zidane has some tough decisions to make this summer but it seems like he won’t be doing too much. One of my main worries is him trusting the older players to step up again while sending a majority of the youngsters on loan, which will affect the team negatively. The squad needs to be rebuilt from the ground up and a few changes here and there won’t be able to give us what we need. The manager should put emotions aside and sell whoever needs to be sold. This season was a humiliation and we shouldn’t go through that again…
